Book Introduction:
The One and Only Ivan is based on the true story of a gorilla named Ivan. Ivan lives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade and is accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls in his domain. Ivan doesn't think about the jungle much. At least not until Ruby arrives at the Big Top Mall. Ruby, a baby elephant, brings change with her, and it's up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

Pre-Reading Questioning
Prior to starting the books, I will set a purpose for reading the text. Students will log in to their google accounts and complete the following form:

Students will focus on word work, comprehension strategies, and point of view while engaging in daily discussions.
Once a week students will use the voice recording application on our classroom iPods to complete a Fluency Check: Rubric
Learning Extensions:
After reading up to page 37 in the text, students will work with partners to create a Presentation in Google Drive to respond to the following prompt:
Create an informational report about gorillas. You may use non-fiction texts and the internet while researching to create a slide for each of the following five sections:
- Physical description, habitat, diet, breeding and young, and interesting facts
After reading up to page 125 in the text, students will respond to the following prompt:
Stella died from her foot infection because Mack did not get her veterinarian treatment soon enough. He dumped her body in a garbage truck with no grave or ceremony. Create a tribute for Stella, from Ivan's point of view by writing a short piece about her life and the memories you had with her. Then, create a memorial stone or statue using Pixlr.
Students will keep a vocabulary journal throughout reading, identifying unfamiliar words. At the conclusion of the book, students will then use Wordle to create a word cloud of key vocabulary terms.
Concluding Activities:
Students will use quizlet to create flashcards and engage in studying techniques using the computer.
